Because heart disease is the leading killer of all Americans it is important that we all know the causes of heart failure and the symptoms of heart failure to help protect ourselves from this deadly disease. The most common type of heart disease is congestive heart failure. In simple terms it means the weakening of the heart muscle itself. It is the leading cause of heart failure today. Knowing the signs of congestive heart failure is imperative. There are some options available for congestive heart failure treatment if the disease is recognized in time.

As we age it is natural that we are not able to physically do the same things we could do when we were younger. What are the causes of heart failure? It is important to know the answer to these questions so that you can make lifestyle changes before your condition is out of control. Some causes are directly linked to heredity. If your parents and grandparents have had congestive heart disease than you are many times more likely to develop it yourself.

There are however many factors that are under your control. Smoking is the number one toxin in our lives today. Over a period of years smoking has a permanently detrimental effect on your heart health. Stopping smoking is the single most important thing you can do to prevent heart disease. Taking steps to control your blood pressure is another essential element of reducing your risk factors. Eating a healthy heart diet without saturated fats is especially important for your heart health. Another major cause of congestive heart failure is the abuse of alcohol. Used in moderation, alcohol can actually be beneficial, but repeated abuse and alcoholism are directly linked with heart failure. These are all things that are completely under your control and with a few lifestyle changes you will find yourself at a reduced risk of developing this deadly disease.

Congestive heart failure treatment is available and in some cases can extend your life considerably. There are medications available to treat congestive heart failure including medicines forhigh blood pressure. Diet and exercise are an essential part of your congestive heart failure treatment. Your doctor will provide you with a plan.

The last resort is a heart transplant which you want to avoid at all costs.
